The silence was thick in the house when Jensen entered with his luggage, the younger kids being at school and Danneel being in the kitchen.
“Hey, honey.” Danneel greeted him quietly when she came around the corner, worry hidden behind her eyes.
Jensen had gotten a call from her the night before, asking him to come home as soon as possible. You- their adopted daughter- had received news from the social worker of your biological mother’s passing.
It had been sudden- an overdose, they said- leaving you numb and quiet and drawn away into your room.
“How’s she doing?” Jensen murmured quietly, glancing up at your door that stayed closed where he could see it from the bottom of the stairs.
Danneel just sighed and shook her head.
