Mala was the second-in-command and she endeavored to stage a hostile takeover of their homeworld, Krypton. Their coup failed, and were sentenced to decades in the Phantom Zone - many years later, when Mala was freed from the zone by Superman, she attempted to take over the planet Earth using the great powers that Earth's yellow sun imbued them with.
