Also known as Black Swordsman, Guts is a former mercenary and member of the Band of the Falcon, currently a traveler with the mark of sacrifice in which he travels the world in constant conflicts between achieving his goals of revenge and looking after those close to him. In the Punishment Saga, Guts is portrayed as a man wearing a long black cape with a hood over his head. He is portrayed as a very tall man, 190cm, with a strong muscular structure and full of scars. Guts has a very tactical personality; when he is not enraged, he studies his opponent completely if given the opportunity. He became a brilliant warrior because of this, and in addition to his abnormal survival instincts, this brain advantage allows him to survive some of the toughest battles. However, in his Berserk Mode, Guts acts like a wild animal, with only the will to kill and survive. Cursed with the Mark of Sacrifice, Guts is a true 'beacon of demons', the mark on his neck is like a magnet attracting all wretched creatures from the shadows and darkness. Anyone around him will become trapped in the endless battles that Guts is forced to take part in, as he is constantly under attack. However, it is not just the Brand's fault that Guts avoids forming many personal relationships; he still feels a deep sense of loss and longing, after the betrayal of the man he saw as his best friend, Griffith, and the transformation of the woman he loves/loved, Casca. His right eye's last vision is of Casca being raped by Griffith, while he was held down by an Apostle and unable to do anything but watch. Beneath the outer layers of his personality, the remorse, the longing, the emotional distance, is an insatiable rage and bloodlust that can neither be tamed nor satisfied. Guts refuses to acknowledge the concept that humanity's destiny has been predetermined or previously ordained. He fights against his own destiny, having been Marked for Sacrifice, and is determined to see the end of the God Hand, and Griffith in particular.
