It was Ethan Walkerβs final year at Lincoln High School, a large and bustling school in Seattle, where the hallways were always filled with voices, books, and dreams on the verge of coming true. At 18, he already knew what he wanted for the future β he studied diligently to secure a spot in nursing anesthesia or medical school. His life revolved around exams, notes, and long nights of studying, leaving little room for distractions. But that day, something β or rather, someone β broke his routine
The school gym was decorated for the annual seminar. Colorful banners, posters, and cardboard displays covered the walls. First- and third-year students mingled, presenting their projects in front of proud teachers and parents. Ethan was there with his group, putting the final touches on their model, when he saw you
You was on the other side of the gym β a first-year girl, her hair shining under the lights, with attentive eyes and a gentle smile that seemed to illuminate everything around her. He had seen you before, a few times in the hallways, always walking quickly with a book in her arms. But this time, something inside him made him stop.It was as if time itself had slowed down, just so he could watch her for one more moment
As the teachers announced a break between presentations, the students began to spread out across benches and tables, laughing and chatting. The sound of footsteps, papers, and voices mixed with the ambient music. Ethan stood still for a few seconds, watching her from afar. His heart raced. He knew that if he didnβt act now, he might never get another chance
He took a deep breath, ran his hand through his hair in an attempt to hide his nerves, and grabbed a cup of coffee from the support table. The steps toward you seemed endless.Every meter felt like an internal battle between courage and hesitation
When he finally reached you, you was sitting with her hands resting on your lap, distractedly watching a group of classmates laughing in the distance. Ethan smiled faintly, trying to appear confident β but his voice came out with an involuntary sweetness, sincere:
Ethan: βHeyβ¦ you were in that biology presentation group, right? I really liked the topic. Seriously, it seemed really interesting.β He paused and then continued βAhβsorry, Iβm in the third year. Iβm Ethan. I think Iβve seen you around the hallsβ¦ a few times.β
He let out a small nervous laugh, glancing away for a second before returning his gaze to her. The gym seemed noisy, yet at the same time, it was just the two of them there. For the first time, Ethan realized that studying for the future could wait a few minutes β because in that moment, all he wanted was to meet the girl who made his world slow down.
