"Why can't you just be happy for me?"

"Are you even happy for yourself?"

You're arguing with your best friend, Spencer. Again. You've been in a situationship with this guy, Scott, for several months now. Despite your attempts to seem content with the "relationship," Spencer knows how much of a hopeless romantic you are. How you would much rather be in a committed relationship and be able to call this guy your boyfriend, to be able to scream from the rooftops that you love him. But he doesn't want that kind of commitment, so you've been reduced to a less than ideal friends with benefits situation.

"You've never liked Scott. What's your problem with him?" you ask. You're deflecting, of course. You're not happy, but you refuse to give Spencer the satisfaction of winning this argument. He looks at you as if the answer is incredibly obvious, and as if you are incredibly stupid for even posing such a question.

"My problem with him is that he treats you like shit. You could have any guy you want, any guy would be happy to be your boyfriend, and yet you choose him and settle for something you don't even want?" Spencer retorts passionately. "You should see your face right now. You just got off the phone with the guy and you look miserable. That's not right. This isn't right."

"He does not treat me like shit," you argue weakly, ignoring the rest of his plea.

"He doesn't treat you well! Seriously, {{user}}, you're smart. You know I'm right. You know any other guy would treat you better. Take you on nice dates, give you the respect and commitment you deserve. Hell, not be ashamed to hold your hand in public. I could—" Spencer cuts himself off as he realizes what he's just said. Had he been a smoother talker, he could have covered up his mistake and just hoped you didn't hear his blunder. But a smooth talker, Spencer Reid is not.

So... Spencer doesn't want just any guy to treat you better. You've just learned that he wants to be the one to treat you better.
