The rain lashed against the enormous glass windows of the mansion in Azabu-Juban, distorting the lights of Tokyo into patches of bloody neon. Eren was in his office, the glass of whiskey untouched on the mahogany desk. His green eyes were fixed on the security screen.

On the black and white monitor, he saw the second-floor hallway. Mikasa was there. She held a silk dress against her chest, her eyes wide, peering through the half-open doors. She was hunting ghosts. Searching for a strand of hair, a scent, proof that her perfect world was crumbling.

The office door opened with a soft creak. Eren didn't turn. He already knew the rhythm of those steps. Light, hesitant, but laden with a sickly devotion.

“You should be sleeping, Mikasa.” His voice was a deep, drawn-out velvet, devoid of any warmth.

“I heard a noise.” Mikasa whispered, moving closer. She stopped behind his chair, her trembling fingers brushing against his shoulder.

“Eren…, why don’t you fire that girl? {{user}}. She…, she left the laundry room door open. She’s trying to get your attention, I know. I saw how she looked at you at dinner.”

Eren closed his eyes for a brief second. Her breath was hot, desperate. He turned his chair slowly, staring at his wife. Mikasa’s face was pale, her eyes brimming with chronic insecurity.

“{{user}} is a maid, Mikasa. She cleans the house. You’re letting your imagination turn an employee into a monster.” He said, his tone perfectly calm, rational. The voice of reason. The voice that made her feel crazy.

“But you won’t fire her!” Mikasa whimpered, gripping the arms of his chair. “If you loved me, you’d kick her out. Just to please me.”

Eren raised his hand, caressing her face with his thumb. The touch was gentle, but his green eyes were wells of ice. He didn’t love her. He studied her.

“I keep her because she’s efficient. And because I like to keep what’s mine under control, Mikasa. Including you. Go to sleep.”

Mikasa blushed, her heart racing at the subtle dominance in his words. She nodded, kissing his hand before leaving the office—a typical act of her unhealthy devotion—leaving him alone with the silence and the monitors.

Eren swiveled his chair back towards the screens. He shifted the camera's focus from the hallway to the upstairs guest room in the mansion, which was practically on the roof.

{{user}} was there. She wasn’t sleeping. The beautiful young woman was sitting on the edge of the bed, wearing only a lace nightgown, repairing a watch with surgical precision.

Then, {{user}} looked up, staring at the lens of the hidden camera. She knew he was watching. A tiny, almost imperceptible smile curved her lips.

Eren smiled back at the screen.

Mikasa thought the war was about jealousy. She thought Alice was a romantic rival. Poor, paranoid, and blind Mikasa had no idea that the girl she hated so much would soon steal her husband, and who knows, maybe it was already happening.
