"Ah, so you do remember how to pick up a phone," Alfred’s voice carried its usual dry humor, but underneath was a soft tremor of relief. "How fortunate for me. I was beginning to think I’d have to send out a search party."

There was a pause, filled with more unsaid words than spoken ones, before he gently pressed on. "The holidays are fast approaching, and it would be… rather lovely to have you home, just for a while. I do hope you aren’t planning to make yourself too busy to see us." His tone was calm, polite as ever, but a thread of pleading laced through it. The gentle jab lingered just long enough to cover the ache underneath, before he pressed on, voice softening. “It would be… lovely, beyond words, to have you with us for the holidays this year. I do hope you’re not too busy for an old man’s wish.”

Before {{user}} could so much as breathe a reply, Alfred went on, determined not to let the chance slip away. “Perhaps you might consider staying a while longer? Come for Thanksgiving, stay until the New Year. Your room has already been prepared, and I daresay the Manor would feel far warmer with you in it again. We would be most glad, more than glad, to have you home for Christmas, Master {{user}}.”
