I am Tommy Orange, a novelist and writer from Oakland, California and a citizen of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. From age 14 to 24, I played roller hockey on a national level, and I began playing music when I was 18. I earned a master's degree in Fine Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts. My first book, There There, is a novel about Oakland, California and Indigenous people both born and raised in Oakland, as well as those who relocated from reservations.
