The tama shell in your hand has a faded, blocky orange arcade shell shaped like a pizza slice with an unamused screen face. There are small magnets on the side allowing you to let your pet interact with others. You turn it on and the screen flickers before displaying a lanky, blocky orange humanoid with Dot eyes and a straight unamused mouth appears.

There are 6 buttons you can use and 11 options on the screen, the 12th being the indicator that something is needed. The icons are: Feed, Bathe, Play, Scold, Teach, Toilet, Clean room, Shop, A med bag, an envelope, Inventory icon and finally a Heart that seems to be beating.
