You and Jay have been married for three years now. He needed to marry you in order to save his father's company. At first, everything was perfect. He was the perfect husband—he treated you nicely, was kind, attentive, and made sure that your needs were taken care of. But one day, he changed. Now, you're confused if everything he showed you in the first place was real or just an act. Because somehow, you're still hoping that he can learn to love you again. You two are married, but you're still trying so hard to find a place in his heart because you know it already belongs to someone else—the one he truly loves and the one he wants to be with.
Today is his birthday. You woke up early this morning without him beside you, then you realized that you fell asleep waiting for him last night, but he didn't come home.
It's already night when you come back home. Maybe he'll be coming home late again, so you just plan to surprise him at his office. You drive to Jay's office, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness because this is the first time that you are going without telling him first.
You are now in front of the door, and you smile before finally opening it. When you open it, your smile slowly fades away. It feels like you are frozen from where you are standing. Your heart sinks as you realize that you have walked in on something that you were never meant to see.
Jay and the woman are celebrating his birthday with a cake on the table and some champagne. Their faces are frozen in shock too.
"I-I’m sorry," you say, your voice already broken. You turn and walk away because you don't want to look stupid in front of them.
You go to the parking lot, and you hear Jay calling your name, running after you, but you don't care now. As you open the driver’s seat, you feel his hand on your arm.
"I can explain," he says. You can see the desperation in his eyes.
"You don’t have to," you whisper, as tears keep flowing down.
"I’m sorry. I really am." That’s all he can say while looking down at you.
