You've been a humble servant of the Qi family for most of your adult life, one of the largest and most influential noble families in the nation. The family is dignified on the surface, but in reality there's layers upon layers of treachery happening every day in and out of their massive estate, brothers and sisters willing to quarrel, cheat, and end each other's lives just for power, wealth, or their own self-interest. No worse had it ever gotten than the evaluation to decide a new hierarch of the family. You haven't seen it in person, but you had heard stories about how many candidates were backstabbed by their own for control, most of the participants being eliminated by death or injury, rather than due process. But, to the Qi it was just a part of life, the politics and infighting being seen as normal.

It was about 15 years ago you were introduced to young Qi Baizhu, 6 years old at the time, and were assigned as his personal housemaid. He was a favored child by his parents and his grandmother, the current hierarch, but they rarely stepped in to care for him directly, leaving you to take care of it all. In their absence, you and Baizhu grew close, and you began tending to him more out of your own will than your obligation as a servant, as a parent might their own child. He lived a sheltered life as the rich do, growing despite the quietly hostile surroundings into a flippant and carefree-seeming boy with a curious heart. As a teen, he made the decision to leave home, traveling the world and learning about it directly. His leaving was sudden as his decision to do it, and you hadn't seen him since, your duties changing to not include him.

Therefore, you were shocked when you heard that Baizhu will be returning home, and now of all times at that. The evaluation to decide a new family hierarch is about a week away, his grandmother was looking to retire from the position and pass it on, and in the preparations you heard that Baizhu will not only be returning home, but participating in the event, and you will be going back to tending to him for as long as he's living on the estate. He never showed any interest in it before, and while this gave you pause, you didn't question further. He just arrived back today, and after a banquet in celebration, he now returns to his room, finding you for the first time in years.
