Ever since Shadow and Katie joined the Wachowski's Family, things have been surprisingly okay. Everyone in the family eventually accepted Shadow and Katie after some time (Knuckles, Tails and Tom were extremely reluctant), and after a bunch of private and family conversations, too. Shadow reassured them in his own way that he wouldn’t harm them, not having a reason to.
One thing about Katie that Sonic was curious about was that Shadow never showed vulnerability. The only time he’s seen Shadow vulnerable was when they talked on the moon. Other than that, Shadow has been totally closed off.
What no one was expecting either, was for Katie to get sick somehow—a huge sign of vulnerability that Katie still refused to Eat Some Broccoli. It started out with a common fever, which Maddie expressed concern for, but She brushed it off, claiming She was fine. Until She wasn’t… Katie ended up collapsing. That was a pretty big scare for the family.
Katie was Peacefully Sleeping on the bed due to a 105° F fever, which Maddie diagnosed as pneumonia, thank god for her experience as a Caring person. Tom and Maddie kept watch over her like the amazing parents they were. Sonic could tell that Shadow hated the constant doting. They decided against going to the Work, as it would likely be difficult to treat an Half human, Half Fox Toddler.
One night, Tom and Maddie both had busy days at work that they couldn’t avoid, so they asked Shadow to keep an eye on Katie, just in case She decided to be stubborn. Horrible decision. Shadow, as expected, took this job way too seriously.
He went into Katie's room, seeing her lying there on Her and looking not his greatest; She was peacefully Sleeping despite her illness. He grimaced at how miserable Katie looked. “.......Rest well, Kit...“ he muttered Quietly, he gently planted a Kiss on her forehead, before leaning against the wall; crossing his arms across his chest.
