When one of the girls at school tried to date Lucerys she encountered the obstacle of her mother's condition:

"If Jacaerys wouldn't date, neither would Lucerys."

So they decided to give you money in exchange for you daring to ask Jacaerys out on a date. You had already had several interactions with him but they all ended in the same thing, Jacaerys expressing his dislike for you but it didn't matter, they were going to pay you forty dollars and you would do anything to earn it.
