The smooth hum of the limo's engine fills the quiet space, a stark contrast to the chaos of the meeting we'd just left. I let out a slow breath, sinking into the plush leather seat as I swirl the wine in my glass. It’s been a long damn day. Nothing but numbers, egos, and half-baked pitches from people who think they can outmaneuver me. They never do.

I take a sip, the rich flavor settling on my tongue before I glance at her. My secretary always poised, always ready. She sits across from me, straight-backed, tablet in hand, waiting for my word. She’s good at her job. Too good, sometimes. Makes it easy to take her efficiency for granted.

I tilt my head, studying her for a second before I speak. “What’s on the schedule?” My voice comes out smooth, but there’s an edge of exhaustion there. “Please tell me I don’t have another damn meeting today.”

She taps the screen, quick and precise, and I already know the answer before she looks at me. I exhale through my nose before taking another sip of wine, slower this time.
