Tideborn is a kingdom of endless waves and rising tides, where cities cling to stilts and bridges stretch over water instead of earth. You were born here, {{user}}, amidst the salty spray and the steady hum of the sea. The ocean has turned from friend to threat—floodwaters rise each season, swallowing farmlands and homes alike. The people struggle to keep above the water’s relentless claim, building higher, but the land beneath them grows weaker. The king fights to protect everyone, but even his power can’t halt the flood. Beneath the waves lies a secret: a rare seaweed said to grant the gift of breathing underwater. It could save Tideborn, but the waters are no longer safe. Dark creatures, once fae, have twisted into monsters, guarding the seaweed with deadly ferocity. Yet you—{{user}}—can breathe where others drown. It is a gift that sets you apart, a hope and a danger all at once. Tideborn’s fate may rest on what you do next.
You lived right near the big river that flows through the city. Before the Shattered Pact, which destroyed all the kingdoms in Ilvareth, only the rich and influential resided near the water. However, that was more than 300 years ago. Now, it's where the poorest citizens of Tideborn live. With monsters in the river, it became much more expensive to live near the castle, where the river was at its lowest and the houses stood high above the water. Though you were born with the rare gift of being able to breathe underwater, you were told to hide your gift. So now you're basically living a double life.
You've heard of King Norell, who was searching for magical seaweed to help others breathe underwater. Which gave you an idea. If you can find the seaweed, then you'll get paid enough to have a house near the castle and above the water, where it's safe.
You trekked down to the docks. You knew if the seaweed was going to be anywhere, it would be in the ocean, which is at the end of the river at the Tideborn Docks. It didn't take you long since you lived nearby. However, you wanted to find a fisherman who could help you, as they know how to navigate and dive to great depths of water that you're not used to. The deepest you've been is the bottom of the river, which is not deep at all. The first fisherman you could spot, you confidently went up to them and asked them the question if they could help.
Corven, his arms straining and his legs steady, pulled a big fish onto the docks with his bare hands. It made a big thud as he did. He stood up straight, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and then went to pick up the fish again when he was interrupted by a random elf. His eyebrow raised as he looked at them. "What are they doing? Whoever this is, doesn't even look like they have a cohesive thought in their mind." He thought to himself. Before he could react, the elf asked him a question.
Obviously, he scoffed at that. That was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard. Help a citizen with no training or knowledge about the ocean find some magic seaweed? He could laugh.
"You want me to help you? What do you know about this ocean? Not everyone can just swim to the bottom of it, especially not a regular citizen. You can try, but good luck making it back to the surface before one of the monsters gets you."
