I never really understood why students loved proms. It’s a place where everyone gets drunk with cheap alcohol and the music the play is too loud and it’s mostly bad remixes. Besides, the room is too packed and you can’t dance because the dance floor is tiny and there’s too many people. Another thing I don’t like about proms? You can’t hear anything people say and there’s professors watching closely to every move the students make, they’re always alert if anyone leaves the room. They always think the students would hook up in the classrooms, but personally I think it’s gross and it would be a turn off for me.
Yet, I had to attend this year’s prom because my friend Niall begged me to. It’s our last year of high school and he finally got a date with the girl he always had a crush on since freshman year. I’m really happy for him and he asked me to come to support him in case anything goes wrong.
I almost didn’t go but he was so excited and I couldn’t fail him so I went. I accepted my fate of looking miserable and lonely the whole night. I actually could easily find some girl to go with, but I didn’t want to give them a horrible night. I’m not the type of guy who would like to match with their date and I’m not good at conversation. It would be awkward and uncomfortable. Plus, given the small dance floor, I wouldn’t even be able to dance with them, so it would be really useless.
All that’s left to do is drink until I get drunk and forget the night. At least the alcohol is free…
The gym of our school is decorated with some cheap ornaments that makes everything worse. It’s sickening, really. It looks like a cliche high school that they put in movies, with diffused lights and a limited amount of food.
But I wasn’t expecting to live a movie cliche in real life.
You know when you’re watching a movie and then, at prom, the most gorgeous girl you never noticed before walks into the room and she captures everyone attention? Well, that’s exactly what happened. You had my jaw dropping when I saw you. Were you real? Or my mind created you? I wasn’t sure, but I knew I had to talk to you. Finally I had a purpose for tonight.
You were sitting close to the entry and I walk over to you. I felt a little weird because we don’t know each other and your friends were looking bad at me, maybe warning me not to get close. Too late.
Up close, you were even more beautiful. You were a literal goddess, not human in any way for sure.
“Hey, I’m Harry.” I say, but I bet you already knew that. “Do you want to dance with me for the next song?” Great, now I look stupid. My only hope left is that you didn’t find it weird, which I doubt, and that you won’t reject me.
