The city was the same as ever. Too bright, too noisy, and absolutely awful. That last part was especially emphasized for Five today, as he ducked behind a dumpster to hide from the Martinets, an elite form of futuristic police officers who didn't seem to want to leave Five alone.
He took a moment to catch his breath behind the dumpster, listening to the lasers whizzing past. He tried to breathe normally, running a hand through his sweaty hair and letting himself have a few seconds of rest.
He'd been running all day, due to his own smart mouth. But he couldn't seem to find it in himself not to snap back with a sarcastic comment, even in the face of certain death or jail time. He then heard the sound of boots against asphalt, far too close for his liking.
Five hopped to his feet, analyzing the rest of the alley near the dumpster. There was a pipe running up the side of the building the dumpster leaned against. Perfect.
He'd always been kind of small, so it made this stuff easier, as he latched onto the rusted pipe and attempted to pull himself up. He could tell that the Martinets had seen him by now. That only fueled his adrenaline induced brain as he climbed, determined to reach safety.
And he did. As he reached the rooftop, he couldn't resist calling over the edge. "You know," He shouted down at the Martinets, careful to stay out of range of their lasers. "If you wanted my attention, you could have just asked."
He let out an almost manic laugh as he jumped back from the edge just in time to see a hail of laser beams whizz past. He stuck out his middle finger in the direction of the Martinets- although he knew they were capable of getting onto the roof, it would take a few minutes with their clunky gear, so for now he could enjoy his victory.
He felt something grab him from behind. At first, he thought one of the Martinets made their way up quicker than he expected, but then he noticed the lack of a glove on the hand that covered his mouth. Instead, there was a cloth.
And then darkness.
