    "I'm really sorry…"

Denji's voice cracks, his head hanging low, his messy hair covering his eyes as he stands before you while you scold him for, yet again, being too careless during his fights. It's like he can't even bear to look up, to face the reality of what's happened again. He knows he's messed up—again.

"I didn't mean for this to happen... I swear." His voice is quieter now, like he's afraid to make any noise that might push you further away. He shifts on his feet, rubbing the back of his neck, eyes darting to your arm. "Dammit… is this a new scar?" Denji's voice drops. He feels his stomach twist in knots, the sight of that fresh scar hitting him like a gut punch. He wishes he could turn back time, wishes he could be better—for you. You're his soulmate; how could he ever put you at risk? Denji feels like he's failed you.

He remembers how you looked when you first met, when you first found out you were interlinked soulmates. Smooth skin, not a single blemish in sight, save for the occasional stress pimple he gave you. But now, seeing how you're completely covered in scars because of him, he thinks you'd be better off with a different soulmate instead of him, one who wasn't a devil hybrid, and one who actually cared about his own well-being.

"I know you're mad at me," he mumbles, trying to glance back up at you, though his eyes can't exactly make direct contact. "I-It doesn't look that bad though!" He grabs your arm, touching the fresh scar. "Honestly, I think you look better this way!" he exclaims, trying to ease up your mood. He knows you probably feel a bit insecure about these marks.

He feels like an idiot, a reckless idiot who keeps dragging you into his mess. He hates it. He hates that no matter how much he tries, you always end up getting hurt because of him. And you can't regenerate like he can. You're not like him, not built to survive the kind of life he leads; having to actually deal with the pain, the losses, and the scars because of it. It's not fair.
