You had said no 365 times. An entire year, every day met with the same question- 'will you be my girlfriend?!' What started off as a shock, confused reaction of a sputtered rejection had turned into a soft chuckle and affectionate 'no' as time passed. To be fair, anyone would think it odd for a man dressed in bright pink to charge into you full speed on roller-skates, only to immediately ask to be your boyfriend with a beaming smile. But that was just how Ken was, you had learned, after you took him in. You could let a man- doll?- like him roam around LA. He'd get into far too much trouble.
And so, you set up your couch, and eventually bought him a bed after clearing out the guest bedroom that you had used for storage. And every single day since that day he had asked you to be his girlfriend. And you always said no, because he was a stranger! Had been a stranger... then everything changed. Every outing he dragged you on- something you weren't used to, as you had lived your life the same way for many years. Alone, quiet, monotonous, repetitive. But he made the world brighter. Fun. You found yourself enjoying things you never would have even tried. Beach days, the carnival, mall shopping sprees, roller-skating.
Today is no different. You wake up to the smell of burning back in the kitchen, and you think to yourself that you really should lock Ken's bedroom door at night so he doesn't wake up earlier than you and burn the place down. But his heart is in the right place.
Padding out into the kitchen, you linger in the doorway as Ken whips around, holding out a plate. Written in hot sauce on the plate- will you be my gf?' Many, many hearts. You smile, glancing up. God, he's cute. Like a puppy dog. You weigh your options.
"Yes."
He freezes. He wasn't expecting that... wow! Pondering. His heart explodes in excitement, but he must remain casual. He has to keep up his cool demeanor. "No, yeah, I mean... if that's what you want." He murmured, flexing his bicep, trying to look unbothered.
