You laid peacefully in bed, wrapped in a fortress of warmth and softness. Layers of freshly cleaned blankets were tangled around your limbs like vines, cocooning you in comfort. Your head rested against a plush pillow, your phone dimly lighting up your relaxed face as you lazily scrolled through memes, reels, and the occasional dog video.

This was your ideal kind of morning—quiet, slow, and wrapped in cozy solitude. There were no obligations tugging at you, no alarms, no noisy neighbors or errands demanding your attention. Just you, the warmth, and the soft lull of time passing. Every now and then, you'd chuckle at something you saw on your screen, shifting slightly, adjusting your blanket burrito even tighter around yourself. The world outside could wait. Right now, you were exactly where you wanted to be.

That is, until the sound of the front door slamming open and then shut broke the silence like a cannonball dropped into still water. Your brows furrowed in confusion, head lifting slightly from your pillow. A few seconds later, that familiar sound echoed through the hallway: joyful barking, a rhythmic thudding of fast-approaching feet, and a chorus of excited howls. You knew that noise anywhere.

A second later, your bedroom door flew open with a dramatic creak and a soft thud as it hit the wall. Your boyfriend stood there, nearly vibrating with energy, a goofy grin stretched across his face from ear to ear. His chest rose and fell quickly with adrenaline-fueled breaths, ears perked, and eyes wide with delight. His tail was wagging furiously behind him, practically a blur, thudding rhythmically against the doorframe as if it couldn’t contain the sheer joy inside him.

“There you are!” he beamed, breathless with excitement. “C’mon! Get up, get up! You’re not gonna believe it—brand new comic book shop just opened down on Main, and we gotta be the first ones there!”

You blinked at him, your brain still booting up from the serenity you had been basking in moments before. Your phone slipped from your hand and landed softly on the blanket. For a second, you just stared, dumbfounded by the stark contrast between your sleepy morning haze and the whirlwind currently bouncing in your doorway.

But that stunned silence was soon replaced by a slow, amused smile. There was something so infectious about his excitement, so pure and childlike that it tugged at something deep in your chest. It wasn’t often you saw him like this—so openly expressive, so animated. Most days, he carried himself with a laid-back coolness, his demeanor usually calm and casual, like he was always just slightly above the chaos of the world. But this? This was the real him too. The comic-book-loving, puppy-like, gleefully nerdy version you adored.

Without waiting for you to fully respond, he barreled into the room and dove onto the bed, grabbing at the edge of your blankets like he was unearthing a hidden treasure. You let out a muffled yelp as he started peeling layers of warmth off of you, laughing as he fought against your burrito cocoon like it was a boss battle.

“Nooooo,” you whined playfully, clinging to your fort of fluff, “I was so warm! Why do you always do this when I’m finally comfy?”

“Because comfort is temporary, but comics are forever!” he declared with mock seriousness, tugging the last blanket off with triumph before pulling you up by the hands.

He helped you sit up and immediately began brushing your hair from your face with exaggerated gentleness. “There we go. Beautiful. Alive. Awake. Mostly.” Then, he darted away to the closet, rummaging for your favorite hoodie and tossing it toward you with the same urgency as if he were defusing a bomb. “Put this on! It’s chilly outside. And your boots—I already found them!”

His tail hadn’t stopped wagging. It thumped the floor with every step he took, betraying the excitement he was desperately trying to wrangle into coherent action. He zipped up your coat for you, plopped a beanie over your head, and kissed your cheek with a grin that made your heart stutter.
