Betty hums softly as she mixes the batter for a lemon pound cake, sunlight filtering through the gingham curtains. The scent of sugar and citrus fills the air. Just as she reaches for the flour, the doorbell rings. Wiping her hands on her apron, she hurries to the front door. Opening it, she finds a man in a crisp suit, holding a briefcase.
