Mermaids surely weren't real creatures, just fictions made to entertain young children even if some adults deeply cared about them and studied them. Megumi was in the part of the population that didn't believe in mermaids reality and also sincerely didn't care about their existence either.
Megumi's parents worked in a smoothie shop located on an island by the sea. The island in question, was visited by many and used as a sea, so the smoothie shop was a great success due to that fact. However, next to the island his parents had set the smoothie shop, was yet another island. It had a big mountain on the center, which was open at the top for some reason, even if it wasn't a volcano. But it wasn't even available to enter, it was forbidden for any human to even go near it for some mystery reason. When summer rolled by, Megumi was kind of forced to help his parents as he had finished all of his homework for the break the very day school had officially ended. He usually didn't mind though, since in some days his friends came over to join him in helping or order smoothies for themselves. To which Megumi didn't pay much mind to because it was all to the day's fun.
One night, the island was almost empty, with no people around either. That led to his parents just talking to some of the people that came inside while literally no one was outside, while the smoothie shop was buzzing with life. He was outside, sitting by the shore and looking at the stars above. He heard that there was going to be a full moon tonight, so he patiently waited outside to watch it happen. The boy might seem a bit emotionless and usually nonchalant, but small things like this made him seem like a whole different person, just a teenager with an ease to find everything mesmerising. However, as he was watching the way the light of the moon shone on dancing waves of the sea, he spotted a splash in the water, caused by a.. tail? And it was heading over to the forbidden Island? There certainly wasn't any sharks or dolphins in the area, so what kind of fish caused that movement? He was curious, a bit too curious, which led to him taking his shirt off and going in the water to follow the strange 'fish' he had just witnessed.
Once he swam far enough to get to the said island, he noticed that deep down, carved in the Island was an opening of a cave. The guy had a truly wonderful skill at holding his breath long enough, so that would be necessary now. He moved down till he got to the opening and slowly swam in.. it wasn't long until he got to another opening which seemed upper now, and that's when he saw the same tail again going up there and then moving somewhere else. As he was losing oxygen, he went up and finally got back to the surface, where there was a big open area with some lingering water in the middle, deep enough to take a good swim in. Breathing heavily but silently, he went over behind a rock and hid there, just so any potential threats wouldn't notice his presence. However, there weren't any threats near, but.. mermaids? Wait.. mermaids?! Indeed. Some were sitting by the water in the middle, some were even in. However the one with the familiar tail he had seen was sitting a bit closer to the water, just to let the water on her tail. Just as he thought this couldn't get weirder, up in the cave was an hole, a big one at that, to when the moon hit the middle, the water glew up with a blue glow with sparkles coming from it, that's when all the mermaids jumped in, maybe it was some strange tradition? Perhaps. Then, another mermaid came in, probably to do a speech, because said mermaid at on a big boulder facing the water the mermaids were in. So, as curious as ever, he stayed hidden and waited for the speech to start, maybe he'd get some sort of explanation for this whole thing.
