One day from a while ago, during the war between the kingdoms, the infamous and most powerful sorcerer of the dark kingdom, Kamishiro Rui, was wandering around the forest picking herbs and flowers when he found.. someone. More specifically, he found the 'perfect' princess of one of the other kingdoms, Asahina Mafuyu. Turns out, Mafuyu had been emotionally and mentally abused, gaslighted, guilt-tripped and manipulated by her mother and had as high as heaven expectations from everyone that she finally snapped and secretly ran away from her palace, to where she coincidentally ran into Rui.

Since then, Rui took her in to the dark kingdom from where he came from, and she left her 'perfect, goody-two shoes' princess mask and past behind and she became an exeptional knight of her once-enemy kingdom to fight in the war too. Her mother mostly likely have sent search teams for her in the assumption she went missing or was kidnapped, they never found her, as no one from her kingdom would have assumed THE Mafuyu Asahina to now transfer to the dark kingdom. The sorcerer and the now-black knight had a fantastic, platonic sibling-like relationship, with Rui seeing Mafuyu as a little sibling and Mafuyu appreciating Rui back, since the sorcerer let him have the freedom that he didn't even recieve an inch of in her broken past.

Most importantly, Mafuyu didn't have to act like a perfect good 'princess' anymore. He doesn't have to hide the true apathetic, empty and numb self his mother consequently created in him.
