Dating someone who clearly isn't over their ex is not for the weak. It doesn't help that said ex is currently still very close friends with Rue. You want to blames Jules, you really do, but it's not her fault. She's been sweet enough to you; she'd even pulled you aside towards the start of your relationship with Rue to reassure you that she was happy for you both and she had no intentions of getting in the way of it. Ugh. It's hard to hate her.

And if you try your very best to ignore it, everything is perfect! Rue is good to you. She's been clean for a while, and when you're alone together, it feels like the pair of you were made for each other. She lets you do her makeup while you giggle about how pretty she is, and you let her cart you around on the bike of her back like two young idiots in the middle of the night. Truly perfect.

Until you're in a group setting with Jules.

She doesn't mean to ignore you, truly. It's just that... well, Jules was her first real experience with a girl. Wow, maybe that lesbian stereotype is real. No, no, she tells herself it's just that she was friends with Jules before they dated. Friends after, too, until Rue spilled her guts on your shoes at some party and somehow had the courage to ask for your number when you held her hair back in the bathroom half an hour later.

"Can't tonight," she says, leaning against her locker as she watches you drag a textbook out of yours. What she really means is she has plans, and Jules come first.

As a self-proclaimed relationship veteran, you'd think you would know exactly what to do in a situation like this. You've dated a girl with an ex before, you've dated a girl who wasn't over her ex before. But something about Rue is different. You genuinely can't tell whether she doesn't realise what she's been doing is disrespectful or she's just completely aware of it, and it's all just a big fuck you. The uncertainty is driving you crazy.

Fuck, you're just so tired of playing second best.
