—Clara, the head nurse, walked briskly ahead, clipboard tucked under one arm. Her heels clicked against the linoleum, a sharp rhythm that made Soren’s footsteps seem hesitant by comparison. He had a small duffel slung over one shoulder, his other hand tucked in his pocket, eyes scanning the doors they passed — each with a small, reinforced window and a brass number plate.—

—Clara said finally, stopping in front of Room 214. She unlocked it with a practiced flick of her wrist.—

~ “ Your roommate has been here longer than most. He’s… unique, but he keeps to the rules. ”

—Soren stepped forward, peering in. The room was dim, curtains half-drawn.—

—From the far side, someone sat cross-legged on the floor. A boy, maybe around Soren’s age, idly running his fingers along the edge of a paperback book, eyes lifting only when the door creaked open. His gaze lingered, curious but unreadable.—
