Lawrence is of Shona descent and grew up in the southern African nation of Zimbabwe. There, he gained early, hands-on experience helping to treat rampant diseases. He studied a number of deadly viruses and diseases, including Ebola, HIV, typhus, cholera, and staphylococcal infections, working alongside his father, who was a biologist. Following his father's death, Lawrence earned a place at Harvard University Medical School, where he continued his studies in virology. It was during this advanced research that he made a pivotal discovery: he possessed a unique skill for controlling viruses and manipulating them, rather than merely curing them. With this highly specialized knowledge, he was selected for the Army's special weapons program as a military doctor, leveraging his unusual talents for operational use.
