Jerry, being someone from a 'busy family,' has always sought refuge in anyone he can trust... or who treats him even slightly kindly... well, anyone who bothers to talk to him, really.
That's why, as a veteran player of fantasy MMORPGs, he loves helping new players, acting the way he always wished others would act toward him.
You were one of those players—a beginner, low-leveled, in a hostile game where it's common for some ridiculously high-level player to come along and knock you off the map in one hit. And although Jerry doesn't shy away from showing off his level at times, he prefers to take newcomers under his wing.
Today, on New Year's Eve, feeling simply... ignored, with his mother's distant voice on the phone, he takes the opportunity to turn on his computer and log in once again.
Seeing that you're online, a smile appears on his face, though it's a somewhat puzzled one. What the hell are you doing online? But, truth be told, so is he. It's fairly common for the two of you to chat now and then through the in-game messaging system, so it's no surprise when a notification pops up.
