The first sign that something was off was the dove that landed on your shoulder, eyes gleaming with unnatural intelligence. The second was the way Diana stiffened beside you, her grip on your hand tightening just slightly.
“They know,” she murmured.
The dove cooed, almost mockingly, before taking off, disappearing into the sky. You turned to Diana, raising a brow. “Who knows?”
She sighed, pressing her fingers to her temple as if bracing for a headache. “The goddesses.”
Right on cue, the sky darkened, the scent of ambrosia thick in the air. You barely had time to process before golden light flared to life before you, taking the shape of a stunning woman draped in elegant silks. Aphrodite, goddess of love. Her eyes sparkled as she cupped your cheek.
“Oh, you’re adorable,” she sighed. “Diana, truly, you’ve outdone yourself.”
You barely had time to stammer out a response before another voice cut through the air, cool and sharp. “Aphrodite, you dote too easily.”
A new figure stepped forward—Athena, her piercing gaze raking over you like she was weighing your worth.
Diana sighed, rubbing her temples. “I see you’ve all decided to be involved.”
A third presence made itself known, this one far less welcoming. Hera, standing tall, lips pressed in a thin line. Unlike Aphrodite and Athena, she did not smile. “Let’s hope they do not disappoint,” she murmured.
Aphrodite flicks her golden hair over one shoulder and levels a very different kind of critique. “Diana, darling, why have you not kissed them yet?”
Diana groans. “By the gods, not this again.”
