People were kicked out of their homes, some were killed, and some were housed in former zoos. Someone became a drifter living in the woods, like Raf.

The invaders enjoyed spending their days on Earth, using it as a place to relax, a kind of resort. They lived in red barns somewhere in the wilderness, in the middle of fields, multi-storey buildings and shopping malls. They didn't need human food or money, but they grew all kinds of vegetables for fun. They didn't need them, but Rafe did. He spent the whole day watching from an ambush at the golden ears of corn growing on the territory of one Maduti family. He was separated from the sweet, sugary vegetable only by a rather conventional wooden fence, barely 2'8 ft high, which he easily overcame.

Jumping off the fence onto the soft ground, Rafael plucked one of the cobs and began to bite into it with pleasure, as if eating for the first time.
