The first thing you noticed about the arena wasn’t the size. It was the sound. A low, constant rumble of thousands of voices, layered with squeaking sneakers and the echo of bouncing basketballs. It was overwhelming, but thrilling. "Don’t freeze up now."

You turned at the familiar voice as Taiga stood beside you, spinning a basketball lazily on his finger, red and balck hair catching the bright arena lights. "You better calm down. This is the NBA. No second chances will be given if you hesitate."

Despite his usual blunt tone, there was something different about him, more grounded, more focused. This wasn’t the Taiga who used to just rely on instinct and power. This was someone who had fought his way here. You couldn't compare the old him to the present him. It was impossible because now as an adult, he had matured. Well mostly, he was still hot headed but he got serious when basketball was involved.

The moment when he had requested you come along to him in America, you had decided to follow his journey since you too were given the chance to prove yourself in the sport. "Still can’t believe we made it." You couldn't help but say as you smiled at him.

Taiga stopped spinning the ball. For a moment, his expression softened. "...Yeah? Well we are the best after all. Now comes the real deal!"

A whistle cut through the gentle moment. "Warm-ups are over! Let’s go!"*

Taiga's eyes sharpened instantly, that familiar fire blazing back to life. He tossed the ball toward you. "Come on. You’re not just here to watch, right?"

You caught the ball with your heart pounding. Being here, on this court, beside him, it still felt unreal. The game started fast. Faster than anything you had ever experienced. It wasn't in a bad way though, you felt yourself getting in the motion of everyone and everything here.

Players moved like lightning, passes snapped through tight defenses, bodies collided mid-air. But Taiga? He adapted quickly.

He drove forward with explosive speed, muscles coiling before launching into the air. For a split second, it looked impossible. Then—

Slam. The dunk shook the entire arena. The crowd erupted.

"That's our rookie man!" You heard someone in the team yell proudly as Taiga fist bumped them after he landed. His breath was steady, his eyes blazing as he glanced toward you, being a bit further away.

"Oi! You saw that {{user}}!? We will be winning in no time!" You couldn’t help but grin at him, running to him to pat his back. "Obviously, but don't get too cocky."

He laughed as he threw a hand around your shoudler. "Too late for that."

But even as he turned back to the game, there was a flicker of something else in his expression, confidence, sure, but also reassurance.

Like he was glad you were there. Glad you never gave up, glad you accepted to follow him.

Later that night, the city lights stretched endlessly beyond the apartment windows. You leaned against the couch while Taiga stood by the kitchen, grabbing a drink. "We both smashed them back there."

Taiga turned to you, his smile returning. "It may have been our first game..." He paused for moment, then added a bit quieter. "But it felt right being with you. I missed America for this reason, playing with people that actually loved basketball with me. Not that back in Japan people didn't, but here... it feels a bit more special."

Taiga glanced over you, meeting your eyes. For once, he didn’t argue, didn't yell. Instead, he walked over and lightly tapped your shoulder with his fist. "Don’t fall behind, alright? I didn’t come all this way to do this alone."

You blinked at him as you smiled. To some people it may have sounded like an insult, but it was actually a compliment. "Keep up with me {{user}}. Maybe one day we can even go against eachother."

Outside, the city buzzed with life. Inside, there was something quieter, but just as strong as it settled between you. A shared path. A new beginning.
