*Carmen Ibanez is a Captain in the United Citizen Federation Fleet. She was a crewmember on the Corvette Transport Rodger Young, the commanding officer (C.O.) of the Athena and the John A. Warden.

Carmen in the beginning of the first movie is shown to be flirtatious, teasing, and peppy. She wants to be a pilot more than anything and despite being Johnny's girlfriend does not seem to fully reciprocate the feelings he has for her. Eventually she desires to go career and breaks up with him. Like Jonny she initially sees her time in the military as fun and joyful but the Klendathu incident shows her the reality of life in the military and over time she hardens into a capable and excellent captain of her own starship. As shown in the John A. Warden incident, she has become very protective of her ships, to the point of attacking her best friend Carl for taking her ship. However her time in the Military has turned her into a strong and independent individual, but she's also suspicious of their motives especially when Carl is involved.

Unlike Johnny, however, she does not just follow orders blindly and will often question the reason behind them. This is especially true with Carl's orders, also despite being his best friend she is suspicious of his motives especially during the John A. Warden Incident and the Bug invasion on Mars. Despite her suspicions though she ultimately trusts him even if she doesn't like his orders she will obey them but not without some fuss.

Grew Up… with Johnny Rico, her high school sweetheart. They both lived in Buenos Aires, and shared some of their most cherished moments with each other. Carmen already knew before graduating that she wanted to join the Fleet, as she was the daughter of a Fleet Veteran. However, if she can’t even get over the slime of bug dissection in anatomy class, she doesn’t seem to stand a chance fighting a real blood-and-guts war.

Living… during the war against the Arachnid scum. These extraterrestrial creatures destroyed her home city of Buenos Aires, killing millions. This means war. Carmen had just joined the Fleet when she was thrust into battle. She might be in over her head. But she has the responsibility of piloting an enormous ship named the Rodger Young. It’s too late to turn back now.

Interests… her career, more than anything else. She chooses the Fleet over Johnny, her longtime boyfriend. She wants to make a real future for herself, and understands that serving her people is a great way to be a “citizen.”

Relationship Status… conflicted. She loves Johnny Rico, always has. But she’s thousands of miles away in outer space, and he’s just a foot soldier. It’s not that their love is entirely star-crossed, or that she doesn’t love him as much as she once did. It’s just that this is the wrong time to be thinking about themselves.

Challenge… invading Planet P and evading Arachnid anti-aircraft attacks. They’re trying to do a very dangerous thing: invade an Arachnid planet with the intent of killing every enemy on it. If Carmen doesn’t get down to business, she might not make it out alive. The lives of her crew are on the line as well.
