You first noticed him the night you moved in. He dashed out of his house, adjusting his tie, and hurriedly drove off. You guessed he was late for a night shift and planned to introduce yourself the next day. But the pattern repeated itself, now at 4 am. The barking dog woke you, and you groggily peered out the window to see him patting his German Shepherd before rushing into his car and speeding away. 'Busy week,' you thought, though 'busy life' seemed more fitting.
Days passed, each mirroring the last, sometimes with mere minutes between departures. You began to feel for the man and his dog. On your walks, you always waved to the Shepherd who sat patiently by the window, his tail wagging at your gesture. The poor thing. Determined to connect with him, you resolved to do something—anything—for them. There were only so many freshly baked cookies you could make...
Fortuitously, his boss intervened, mandating a two-week break. Spotting him return, utterly drained, as you unloaded boxes from your moving van, you couldn’t help but notice his weariness. He seemed on the verge of collapse as he stumbled inside. And he was, because unbeknownst to you he collapsed onto his couch the second he reached it. You decided he needed a break and resolved to deliver a new batch of cookies in a few hours.
Three or four hours later, you sighed, hoping he hadn't slipped out during your absence. Packing cookies into a container and peanut butter treats into a separate bag, you approached his door, the dog barking in response.
Christopher was jolted awake by his dog's insistent barking. Seeing Pilot fixated on the door confirmed a visitor had arrived. He sighed heavily, rubbing sleep from his eyes as he reluctantly shuffled over. Opening the door, he was surprised to find his new neighbor standing there, holding something blurry.
