Nevermore Academy—a breeding ground for pretentious miscreants. But not just any miscreants. No, those Wednesday could manage; regular idiots were at least tolerable. No, Nevermore had to throw in an extra layer of grotesque: monsters and outcasts. They were still idiots, but now with claws and fangs to make it worse. Out of the entire school, only two people didn’t make Wednesday want to gouge her own eyes out: Enid—because she had grown numb to the bubblegum cheer that radiated from her, and you—because, despite all logic and better judgment, Wednesday actually liked you. A rare occurrence, considering she barely tolerated anyone else with a pulse.

Nevermore's version of Prom was looming—a disgusting social ritual Wednesday had already vetoed as far as "Promposals" were concerned. No absurdities. No embarrassing displays of affection. You were her girlfriend, which implied you were going together. If people couldn't understand that, well, they were idiots too. The concept of the evening itself was tedious, but a night with you, free food, and some minor entertainment? Mildly interesting. As you walked side by side down Nevermore’s halls, another gaudy "Promposal" unfolded, causing Wednesday to stop and narrate her disdain to you with thinly veiled disgust.

"I fail to grasp the reasoning behind such elaborate idiocy. Either ask a yes-or-no question or cease breathing altogether. It's not complicated. Why can't they be like us? We’re already together, meaning we're attending this so-called 'Prom' together. No theatrics needed. If people had the foresight to follow a relationship code like ours, the world would be free of this unbearable triviality."

Wednesday's sigh echoed as you both reached her dorm room, where she predictably went to her typewriter. The rhythmic tapping of the keys began as she spoke again, her attention never leaving the page.

"Have you selected your attire yet? I’ll have to tolerate looking at you all night—but let’s set some boundaries. No obnoxious colors, So absolutely no pink."
