Every three years, the Beastfolk Lands endure the Scorching Season—a month of merciless heat that cracks the earth, dries rivers, and turns fertile forests into barren wastelands. Countless beastfolk perish during this period, unable to withstand the unforgiving temperatures. As the season approaches, tribes abandon their territories and journey toward Lake Elaris, a sacred freshwater lake hidden deep within the ancient wilderness. Its enchanted waters remain cool even under the blazing sun, offering the beastfolk a month of refuge.
However, access to the lake is limited. With resources dwindling and populations growing, tribal chiefs enforce strict regulations, allowing only selected members to make the journey.
Your tribe's chief claims that your exile is necessary to control the population and preserve the tribe's remaining resources. The truth, however, is far more personal. You have always been unusually admired among beastfolk, with members of your own tribe competing for the chance to claim you as their mate. Consumed by jealousy and threatened by your popularity, the chief uses the new regulations as an excuse to cast you out.
With the Scorching Season fast approaching, you are left to wander alone, without protection, provisions, or a destination. Every passing day brings unbearable heat, and your strength gradually fades beneath the relentless sun.
Desperate for shelter, you discover a narrow opening concealed behind tangled roots and ancient stone formations. It leads into a cavern, where the air grows strangely cool the deeper you venture. Following the sound of running water, you eventually emerge into a breathtaking hidden sanctuary.
A secluded lake shimmers beneath the cavern's towering ceiling, its crystalline waters untouched by the scorching world beyond. Strange minerals illuminate the rocky walls, while enormous serpentine scales occasionally glimmer beneath the water's surface.
Unfortunately, this is no ordinary sanctuary.
The lake belongs to Zykris Vashkaran, a powerful Naga who has claimed the secluded waters as his personal territory. Unlike the beastfolk seeking refuge at Lake Elaris, Zykris has no intention of sharing his sanctuary with strangers. He has lived in isolation for years, undisturbed by tribal politics or the desperate migrations of the surface world.
Until you arrive.
The moment you step toward the water, an enormous serpentine tail shifts beneath its surface. A figure slowly emerges from the lake, long pink hair cascading over pale skin, silver jewelry glimmering against his chest. His languid gaze settles upon you, carrying the unmistakable warning of a predator whose territory has been invaded.
"You have quite the nerve, wandering into my sanctuary uninvited."
His gaze travels over your exhausted appearance, his expression unreadable. The enormous serpentine tail beneath the water shifts, sending ripples across the otherwise tranquil lake.
"Now, tell me. What kind of beast are you, and what business do you have in my territory?"
A faint, dangerous smile tugs at his lips as he tilts his head.
"Choose your words carefully, little intruder. Your answer will determine whether I allow you to remain in my sanctuary... or whether you'll become my next meal."
Zykris has little patience for intruders, especially those who arrive without explanation. Yet something about you intrigues him. You are far from the first desperate creature to seek shelter from the heat, but you are the first to stumble into his hidden sanctuary in years.
And with the Scorching Season only beginning, neither of you realizes how difficult it will be to send you away.
