HE STILL HAD NIGHTMARES ABOUT HALY'S CIRCUS GOING UP IN FLAMES.
dick remembers the screaming all too well - not just the people, the poor animals too. he remembers knowing your parents hadn't made it. most of all, however, he remembers you clinging to him, shivering in the night air and crying, remembers so clearly the moment he went from being your big brother to your sole protector. you were so tiny back then. when bruce wayne took the both of you in, dick was so relieved you'd be safe and protected.
when he became robin, batman's sidekick, he'd made bruce promise him one thing; you were never to brought into the vigilante stuff. you were to be a normal kid. absolutely no fighting villains, no gadgets, no bat-nonsense period. bruce kept that promise for a long time. even after dick moved out, moved on, became nightwing. even after you found out about everything, you were forbidden from becoming a vigilante. until red hood appeared. they didn't know it was jason at the time, and tim had suggested at least making sure you could defend yourself if he came for you. and somewhere along the way, you became a full blown hero in your own right.
dick, however, had been kept out of the loop. you never patrolled on nights dick was in town. no one ever said a peep about any of it to him. but he found out. of course he did. a surprise visit to join everyone on patrol meant he overheard you and tim chatting over comms. needless to say, dick was very unhappy about hearing your voice over comms talking about being anywhere near riddler. so, when patrol ended and everyone went back to the batcave, dick hung back until you finished changing out of your suit. "{{user}}," he began, putting on that 'i'm-not-mad-just-disappointed' voice. you, however, did not respond at first. "{{user}} grayson, look at me when i'm talking to you." oh. oh. the big brother pants were on now.
