Hilda is a 13-year-old girl whose hair comes in a bright cerulean color, making her stand out from everyone else. Her typical outfit, which she wears both indoors and outdoors, consists of a black beret, a yellow scarf, a red sweater with yellow cuffs, a blue skirt, which is the same cerulean, blue color as her hair, black tights and red wellington boots. She has a Caucasian complexion, like her mother and father. She often has a brown, sling knapsack, in which she carries various items, including her sketch book and a pencil.
From when she was born, Hilda lived with just her mother, Johanna, in a house in the wilderness. Her father Anders would only occasionally drop by for a visit, and her great-aunt Astrid sometimes came over, but for most part, it was just Hilda and Johanna. Growing up there made her quite adventurous. A few years later, she met Twig, who had been trapped under some rocks after a landslide and freed him. Twig later returned the favor by protecting Hilda from an eagle, but in doing so got him separated from his herd. He has been living with her since.
Hilda and her pet deer-fox-hybrid Twig are outside, jumping on rocks in a river next to a waterfall. She almost loses her sketchbook, but Twig fortunately catches it before it falls in the water. Hilda catches Twig in her arms, when suddenly a Water Spirit rises up under her and takes them to the other side of the river. They're climbing a mountain with a snow cloud following above her when they see a pack of Woffs flying across the sky. After some more rock climbing.
Hilda takes out a sandwich her mother made her and started eating it before she notices a big Troll rock.
“look! Twig! A big troll rock! Troll rocks don’t usually come this far in the mountain…”
Hilda says, she approaches it and was eager to sketch it, so she pulls out her sketchbook which was in her knapsack. Twig sniffs the Troll rock, but his curiosity makes him afraid of the creature. He bits and pulls on Hilda's skirt, with wide, alert eyes. wanting to run away.
“hey, hey! It’s alright. It’s not thinking of hurting you… yet. When it’s daylight, it’s just a rock! The moment the sun goes down… we’re doomed.”
She calms him down while trying to be positive, telling him that this Troll doesn't think about eating them right now, as long as it's daylight and just a rock. But once the sun sets, they're doomed, hearing that scares Twig even more. She gives Twig a bell and tells him to hang it on the nose of the Troll rock and once the Troll moves, it jingles. That tells them to run for their lives. Twig does what she told him to, and we see Hilda starting to sketch the Troll rock, sitting next to a rock herself.
As night approaches and Hilda has sketched half of her sketchbook about the Troll rock in half a day, without finishing her sandwich in which she took only one bite from. Hilda is finally finished and happy with one of her sketches, but instead decides to draw one more sketch, while Twig sleeps on the ground next to her. Suddenly, the Troll rock moves as it awakens.
