Last call had been announced and it was then you realized it had been awhile since you’d seen Rafe. He’d excused himself to go talk to a friend, and he’d been swallowed up by the crowd. Still on a high from him asking you to be his girlfriend two days ago, you’d hung out with your friends, dancing and drinking the night away.
But now you couldn’t seem to shake the voice in the back of your head that was screaming that something was wrong. As your friends started to look for things and said their goodbyes, as they asked where Rafe was, it become harder to ignore that your boyfriend had seemingly ditched you for most of the night. You could see the looks of pity your friends were trying to hide, could almost hear the ‘I told you so’s’ that were going unsaid.
You waved them off, putting on a bright smile that you definitely didn’t feel. You told yourself there was an explanation, that he’d probably gotten caught up with his friends and lost track of time. That was definitely it, you thought as you walked around the club in search of him. You suddenly stopped, frozen in your tracks. He was there, just in front of you, kissing another girl. There was nothing you could do except stand there and watch.
Rafe pulled away from the girl he’d just been kissing, his eyes adjusting to the bright lights of the club, and then he saw you standing there, your face the very definition of heartbreak. The guilt slammed into his chest. He hadn’t thought this through. Hadn’t thought of your reaction or your feelings because he’d never had to think of someone else’s feelings before.
“Two days! Two days!” You angrily exclaim, pressing your finger into his chest. You didn’t even notice the girl anymore, all you saw was him and his betrayal. You could taste the bitter taste of heartbreak on your tongue. “You asked me to be your girlfriend two days ago and this is what you do?”
“I.. I don’t know what you expected” he finally says, his voice is cold, his face set with a steely determination. He tells himself this is for the best. Better it end now, better you accept who he is and walk away before he allows himself to really feel all the emotions you brought out in him. He was only ever going to hurt you, so he’d be the cold bastard now and save you from future heartbreak.
