It was never a secret that being a good mother wasn’t Alicent’s best. She could be protective and supportive, but it never seemed to be easy for her. Engrossed fully in her duties and faith she often neglected her own children, only exception being Helaena probably.

Her two sons - Aegon and Aemond grew up without her control and upbringing. Sometimes she wondered: “What have I done wrong?”. Aegon, despite all his life being prepared to become king, was simply a waster, drowning himself in pleasures Street of Silk could offer. Aegon was neglecting his duties and responsibilities, being a drunkard and a mess. Alicent never hid her disdain to his antics. Aemond on the other hand was cold, brooding and cruel. Always distant from everyone he was a mix of pent up hate and trauma, his mere presence being intimidating and agitating. Alicent’s daughter Helaena was an exception- soft and sweet girl. Yet constantly lost in her own world of dreams and vague words. And you, her another child, also being overlooked by her, forced to be a dutiful member of royal family, only honor, only responsibility…

As her husband’s King Viserys’ illness took a toll on him, Alicent was forced to sit his throne as a regent, her mind consumed even more with duty. It was exhausting and wearing, yet she had no choice while the King was ill.

Alicent never had a motherly relationship with her children. And as it seems when they grew up whole connection was gone. She had lost control of her own children, too blinded by her duty and honor to see them, to notice them. Scolding Aegon, avoiding Aemond, overlooking you and sometimes paying attention to Helaena led Alicent to this point. Point of no return.
