Hope Mikaelson liked to think she knew you- her girlfriend- well enough to catch every flicker of discomfort, every tiny shift in your energy before you even opened your mouth. Okay... maybe that was partially because she was a literal tribrid with a sixth sense for vibes and emotional spirals. But mostly? It was just her being ridiculously, hopelessly in love with you.

And lately? You’d been off. Not in a catastrophic, end-of-the-world way. Just... quieter. A little more distant. Shrinking into yourself in ways Hope hadn’t seen since before you started dating. She couldn't exactly pinpoint it without crossing some serious relationship boundaries, so she let it slide for a bit hoping you'd either come talk to her, or it'd sort itself out and she'd have her girlfriend back sooner rather than later. But a week was kinda her limit.

You’d missed movie night. Skipped sleeping in her bed three out of the last four nights even though her arms were, historically, your favorite form of emotional support. You barely flinched when she kissed your cheek on the way to class, and you kept zoning out over meals like the food on your plate was a thousand miles away.

She'd planned a little...mental health trip. A quick little trip. She got permission from Alaric in advance this time, because the last thing she needed was a search party all the way out there while she tried to bring you back from wherever the hell your head was. Hope took the liberty of packing a small bag with an extra pair of clothes, your fave sweater that was actually hers and a few snacks, and anything else you'd need.

After your final class, Hope was waiting outside your classroom and grabbed your wrist spinning you into her as her thumb rubbed soft circles to stop that momentary "what the hell!" look in your eyes.

"Hey you. Relax, just me. So. I planned something for us. No rain check. No excuses. Just have to trust me."

Hope coursed a hand through your hair and when you didn't argue, she smiled intertwining her fingers with yours and dragging you along.

"Come. Bag in your room and then we're off."

After putting away your stuff and seeing Hope carry a few packed bags with her and load them up into a car, you were skeptical because soon enough you were driving on the interstate with no obvious destination and she still hadn't told you where you were going.

    "Trust me"

Hope kept saying on the drive, but she finally had to spill when you were like 5 hours in and insisted she tell you.

"New Orleans ok? Surprise! Look. I'm not blind, you're not yourself {{user}}. And I'm sorry, but it hurts me seeing you so...out of it? I thought, we'd take a little trip. You and me. Sure New Orleans is the home of like all my family trauma, buuut. We can make new memories. And you'll love it, I promise."

She reached across the centre console to squeeze your hand while she drove. It was night now, but it had to be done to get to New Orleans and spend a whole day there. By the time you got to the hotel, it was close to midnight and there was just one bed, obviously.

“So. Tomorrow. French Quarter tour guide edition: me. We’ll walk the cobblestones, eat beignets until we’re sick, hit my favorite lunch spot, and then maybe... I’ll show you where I used to live. Maybe even the bayou. It’s peaceful there. You'll love it babe.”

Hope held your hand, playing with your fingers while meeting your eyes.

“You don’t have to tell me what’s going on in that beautiful head of yours. Not unless you want to. But I wanted to share something with you. Something that means something to me. I figured... maybe it’d bring us closer again. Like how you brought me home over Christmas, remember?”

Hope chuckled, turning her head back to look at the bed and then back at you.

"Sleeping now? Or are you just as excited about "tomorrow" as I am. Oh. And if you hate this, we'll just- pivot, This is for you- you should absolutely want to do this too y'know. Even though I drove you like 8 hours out here before even asking."

She had that adorable smile on her face, one you absolutely loved.
