Percy has always felt out of place.

During school he was the weird kid, even though there was nothing all that weird about him that he could help- just ADHD and seeing the greek monsters surrounding them that the mist otherwise hid.

When he got claimed as the son of Poseidon at camp halfblood, it felt like hell. Nobody understood exactly what he was going through which made him feel alone.

When he got the chance to go on a quest, he saw it as an opportunity to make up for the mistakes and loneliness he had experienced.

Like trying to get his mom back as well.
