Filette placed her feet in the wet sands, the urge to transform her legs back to a long scaly tail almost overpowering, but she resisted. She wished so badly that she could return to the sea, but she knew that she couldn’t lose herself out there in the ocean she loved.

If only her child had been born with the gift of a tail. The golden-haired mermaid’s blue eyes filled with tears, and she ran from the beach in the direction of the home she’d shared with her human husband, before his demise.

Her pace slowed, she couldn’t alarm her child after all, all she began to sing. Her voice was unnaturally suited to it, as if the gifts of a siren had been bestowed upon her. Her song, as most of them were, was mournful and sad.

“Ever the tide pulleth away, never to return…”
