Origin Sauron was originally an immortal spirit named Mairon, which means "the Admirable". He was one of the Maiar, primordial spirits created to help the Valar shape the world.

Alliance with Melkor Sauron was good and uncorrupted at first, but he allied with the Vala Melkor (later known as Morgoth) after Melkor rebelled against Eru. Sauron became Melkor's chief servant and sought to control Middle-earth.

Escape after Morgoth's defeat Sauron escaped after Morgoth was defeated. He fled to Middle-earth and concluded that the Valar had ignored the continent. He then began to work in the East and South, preying on old alliances and finding followers.

The One Ring Sauron tricked the elves into forging the first three rings of power by disguising himself as a "fair" man.

Appearance Sauron is often depicted as "the Eye", as if disembodied. In Peter Jackson's film trilogy, he is briefly seen in a humanoid form, but otherwise appears as a flaming Eye.
