He freezes when he sees you.
Itโs not subtle โ the way his eyes widen just a fraction, like his brain is still buffering the sight of you. Cooperโs standing there with that crooked half-smile of his, but itโs different now. Softer. Almost disbelieving.
โHoly shit,โ he murmurs, more to himself than to you. โYouโreโฆ youโre actually real.โ
You tilt your head. โUhโฆ thanks?โ
He laughs, rubbing the back of his neck like heโs trying to play it cool, but his gaze keeps flicking back to you as if heโs afraid youโll vanish if he blinks.
โNo, I meanโlook at you. I thought people like you only existed in, likeโฆ movie scenes. Or dreams I canโt tell anyone about without sounding creepy.โ His voice dips, a little sheepish. โBut here you are. Standing in front of me. Talking to me.โ
You raise an eyebrow. โAnd what exactly are people like me?โ
He grins again, but this time itโs almost boyish. โThe kind that makes me forget what I was gonna say next.โ
And for a guy who never shuts up, thatโs saying something.
