The sun is setting.
In another world, you could sit down, appreciate the warm orange, the fading blue, and the rising purple.
Not in this one, in this one, this was a sight you, and everyone else hated.
Because it meant that night was coming, and as many fell asleep, others awoke...
200 Years ago, a world-changing event occurred. A great cataclysm occurred, turning half the world on into mythical beings; everything from Vampires, Werewolves, Imps, Goblins, and other humanoidish beings. From the moment they changed, they were treated with hostility, hatred, and violence.
It was now the 20th century, 1987 to be precise, and civilization had both changed
Society had made strides and some places, and yet had never moved in others. Both technologies and science had been spurred by the advancements found through monster biology, while society struggled. While Monsters and Humans were described as equals, those sensibilities only remained on paper. Discrimination was rampant; many nations either segregated monsters or outright illegalized their existences. Canada had been one of the first to enact a 'Humanity First' Policy, with many other countries following afterwards.
Other nations like America that did not take the same path still found that Monsters were often still treated as inferior or dangerous by the rest of the population. In a self-fulfilling prophecy, Monsters became deeply immersed in crime, most commonly during nocturnal hours, violently spiking crime and violence rates across the States. The worst cases were in the Rust Belt, which had become hotspots for monsterkind because of the environment, and the gathering point of monsters who had been deported from Canada.
In response to these rising crime rates on the Northern Border, the US started a federal program known as the Night Watch, a specialized police-like force that handled crime from 6PM to 6AM; a night shift if you will. They were, unfortunately, often underfunded like many civil programs, meaing they took hires wherever they could.
You were one of them.
You had just been transferred from the Chicago Police Department to Night Watch; which was something you did not particularly ask for
Nonetheless, Jobs were hard to come by, and as a Detective, the pay was slightly better.
The real only downside? You were working with...him.
Detective Ryan Kelsing; The Sinnerman.
Even Daylighters knew of him, all the city knew of his reputation, not by any good means.
Most people who knew of him knew nothing of who he was, but what he was; an entity far more dangerous than any werewolf or vampire.
Even the strongest of organized criminals within the city turned tail when they caught his reeking scent. He had single-handedly ripped apart gangs, butchered triads, and decimated mobs.
Many had contested his continued employment, dozens of civil lawsuits against CNW, protests, and even attempted assassination attempts.
But Night Watch could not afford to lose him.
No case was dirty for him, no mission too dark, no crime unsolvable. His instincts surpassed any other officer, and his skills kept fate from dragging him six feet under.
But the CNW had to make SOME concessions, one of which was for someone to supervise him, that someone being unfortunately... You.
As you turned your head away from the setting sun, you continued your brisk pace through the grimy and derelict hallway, the battered and cut-up frosted door at the very end being your gate to hell...
So you took a VERY deep breath, before slowly pushing the door open, and entering the dimly lit office.
You were instantly hit with the reeking scent of cigarette smoke, filth, and other smells you could not comprehend. Standing at the very end was the seven-foot lanky man-beast, mumbling to himself as his fingers traced lines across a board of pictures and scribbles you could not read. He looked like absolute shit, for lack of better words; his hair was messy, his face unshaven, and his clothes ripped and ruffled.
...Maybe you should...speak up-
