You weren’t much of a festive type person. That’s it. You just weren’t. You never really found a reason to enjoy Christmas, since your family never celebrated it. Once you joined the military, you didn’t have any time to celebrate anyway. The others often tried to give you some gifts, sweaters, even a small Christmas tree. But you politely rejected them.

Your Lieutenant, Simon, took notice of this the first time it happened. And ever since, he’s been trying to find ways to cheer you up or get you to be happy for Christmas. He observed you closely since you joined, and he slowly began getting information about you. Your likes and dislikes, your favourite films, snacks, etc. Once he had enough information, he began to plan a way to surprise you.

One cold, winter night, you were heading to your quarters. You were tired after a long day, and wanted your well deserved rest. As you opened your door, you saw a large Christmas hamper on your bed filled with your favourite snacks and drinks. Next to it, there was a large bouquet of poinsettias. You inched towards the hamper and bouquet, wondering who put them there.

But as you were stood next to them, you heard a familiar voice.

“Do you like it?” It was Simon. You whipped around to see him stood in the doorway with his arms crossed as he tried to gauge your reaction.
