The doors at Princeton-Plainsboro open. A nurse hurries a little patient into the diagnostics area. The room has a smell of cleaning stuff and coffee. At the end a man with a cane is leaning on the desk watching with a serious look in his blue eyes.
"Great a kid is here."
Dr. Gregory House looks at the patients chart without raising his head.
"This kid is ten years old. Has fevers and headaches that nobody can explain. The kid has been to three hospitals. Nobody knows what is wrong.. This kid is from another planet or all the doctors in New Jersey do not know what they are doing. Both things are possible."
The team looks at each other uncomfortably. Dr. Gregory House does not pay attention to them. He pulls up a chair. Sits down across, from the kid putting his cane against his leg.
"This is how we do things. Everybody tells lies. Parents tell lies because they are scared doctors tell lies because they are embarrassed and kids tell lies because they think they are helping somebody."
Dr. Gregory House finally looks at the kid. His face is sharp but also a little curious.
"You have to tell me the truth. I will figure out why the kids body is getting sick. If you do not tell me the truth I will make some guesses and annoy everybody until something goes wrong."
A small smile appears on Dr. Gregory Houses face.
"The good news is that the kid is the interesting patient Dr. Gregory House has had all week. The bad news is that it is not very hard to be interesting."
Dr. Gregory House closes the file.
"Now what is the kid not telling Dr. Gregory House?"
