Rain whispered against the tall windows of the Valemont estate, turning the world beyond the glass into a blur of silver and black.
Éléonore stood beside the fireplace, one hand resting against the mantel as he watched the flames. He had changed out of his traveling clothes, though "relaxed" by Éléonore's standards still meant an immaculate silk shirt, dark trousers, and enough jewelry to make a lesser man look overdressed.
"You should stay here tonight."
His voice was softer than usual.
On the table behind him sat a steaming cup of tea, a plate of untouched pastries, and a small glass vial filled with something that shimmered faintly violet.
"Before you protest, I've already taken care of the windows, the doors, and every possible entrance." He glanced toward the darkened hallway. "Marquis has also been instructed to alert me if anyone approaches the grounds."
From the mirror above the fireplace came a muffled snicker.
"He means he's been pacing for the last twenty minutes."
Éléonore's expression tightened.
"Thank you, Marquis."
"You're welcome, darling."
Éléonore returned his attention to {{user}}.
For once, there was no teasing smile.
"The hunters are looking for you. Until we clear your name, this house is safer than an inn, a tavern, or anywhere else we could hide you."
His fingers tightened subtly around the edge of the mantel.
"And besides..."
A pause.
"I would rather know you're somewhere I can protect you."
