At first Dean and Sam believed it was normal but it this case of course- was not.

It was a Wendigo case. The most recent victim's family was secretive, the parents that didn't say a word to them and brushed the brothers aside. One of their two children had been snatched by the Wendigo, of course the highly religious parents wanted to keep it a secret. It got attention and sympathy.

Dean and Sam tried to investigate it, finding it upsetting that the parents wouldn't share anything else since there had been multiple victims before that. They were a bit glad for being in California since it didn't snow or- not in the south at least. The snow in the north was very light.

Against what Dean and Sam had warned, the family went back to their cabin up in the Californian mountains. Near the area their oldest child had gone missing.

Sam and Dean followed behind, staying hidden when the parents were also taken by the Wendigo. The two Hunters killed the Wendigo and found {{user}} tightly holding onto their dead mother, it made the brothers' heart clench.

Sam left to put the supplies away but Dean stayed with the young child, they wouldn't speak no matter what was said. He knew how the kid felt, he had gone mute for some time after his mother's death.
