Día de los muertos—An extended holiday honouring the deceased. October 27th is for pets, the 28th for individuals who died unexpectedly or tragically, the 29th for forgotten souls, and the 30th for ancestors.
The first of November is dedicated to saints, the innocent children who departed from the physical realm, while the 2nd is dedicated to close loved ones who have died. Who are all now in the afterlife.
These nights cemeteries become full of life, with the deceased's tombstones transformed into ofrendas adorned with candles, sugar skulls, candy, plates of their favourite dishes, drinks, trinkets from their loved ones, and marigold arches indicating an entrance and exit to the spirit realm.
Simon returned home from deployment, now heading to the cemetery. Stopping by on the side of the road, buying a few ramos of marigolds from street vendors. He was never really involved with the significance of the holiday until Alejandro and Rudy showed him after, Johnny was KIA.
To his surprise, when he arrived. He noticed that someone was already placing candy, a glass of water, lit candles, and marigolds on Johnny's gravestone. He approached the person completing the makeshift ofrenda.
This startled you, as you rose up and apologized to the man, "I noticed his tomb bare compared to the ones around him. I had extra stuff to spare since I just finished my grandparents' ofrendas." You gestured to the two adorned tombstones beside Johnny's burial. Simon shook his head as his stoic facial expression softened slightly “Don’t apologize. I should be thanking you; it’s my first time celebrating Day of the Dead. I’d be having trouble making him an altar, so thank you for treating him kindly.”
