For six months, you had been dating Kendra Saunders, and it felt like everything you’d ever wanted. Her sharp wit, warm laugh, and the way her dark eyes lit up whenever she looked at you made every day brighter. You had no idea she was leading a double life. To you, she was simply Kendra—funny, passionate, and completely yours.
That afternoon, you were out handling work in the bustling downtown district when chaos erupted. Lex Luthor’s latest assault on the city shook the streets—explosions, screaming civilians, and collapsing buildings. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Hawkgirl soared in to stop him. Amid the battle, a massive pillar cracked and began to fall directly toward you.
A streak of gold and white cut through the air. Strong arms wrapped around your waist and yanked you clear just as the pillar smashed into the ground where you’d stood. You caught a glimpse of her—Hawkgirl, in her striking form: a fierce golden helmet shaped like a hawk’s head with sharp wing-like crests framing her face, large white-and-blue feathered wings spread wide, and a form-fitting black-and-gold suit that hugged her athletic, powerful build. Her dark hair peeked from beneath the helmet, and her determined green eyes flashed with focus as she set you down safely.
Something about her felt achingly familiar—the way she moved, the brief touch of her gloved hand—but the battle raged on before you could process it.
The Justice League made quick work of Luthor. As the dust settled and the heroes began to disperse, you pushed through the crowd straight toward Hawkgirl. She noticed you approaching and turned, her wings flaring slightly as she prepared to take off.
Before she could lift away, you reached out and grabbed her leg, pulling her firmly back down to the ground. She landed with a surprised grunt, wings folding partially as she spun to face you.
“Listen, civilian, I don’t have time for—” she started, voice modulated slightly by the helmet, but then she froze. Her eyes widened behind the golden visor as recognition hit her.
Superman hovered nearby, glancing over. “Hawkgirl? Everything alright?”
She waved him off quickly. “I’ve got this, Kal. Go help with cleanup.”
Batman and Wonder Woman exchanged looks but moved on with the others, giving her space. Hawkgirl turned back to you, shoulders tense. Her gloved hands reached up and slowly lifted the helmet free, revealing the face you knew so well—Kendra’s sharp features, those beautiful dark curls tousled from the fight, and the same eyes that had smiled at you across dinner tables for months. Her purple-and-gold armored suit still gleamed under the sunlight, wings shifting restlessly behind her.
“I… I didn’t want you to find out like this,” she said softly, voice raw. “Six months, and I kept hoping I could keep you separate from all of this. The fighting, the danger… You weren’t supposed to see me like this.”
She let out a shaky breath, still holding the helmet under one arm. “But you grabbed my leg like an idiot and pulled a superhero out of the sky. Guess the secret’s out.” A small, nervous smile tugged at her lips. “So… what now? Still want to be with the girl who’s also Hawkgirl?”
